About Us

Meet our Health Care Professionals

Dr. Astrid Gutsmann D.O., Ph.D.

Dr. Gutsmann, was born in Hamelin, Germany.   She traveled to the United States with the Lion's Club International Youth Exchange Program.  Initially, she planed to stay in the United States for a couple of months, however, the summer she spent on an American farm changed her mind, and she has been here ever since.   The farm animals sparked her interest in biology, and the small American farm town ingrained a sense of caring and community, which is so important to the family practice physician.  She attended American Universities and received Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) and Masters of Science (M.S.) degrees in Biology, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Molecular Biology.  After completing postdoctoral studies in the molecular biology of aging, Dr. Gutsmann returned to medical school in order to help individuals in need of a caring physician.

Dr. Gutsmann completed her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, and her family practice residency at Southwestern Medical School, in Dallas, which serves one of the largest county hospitals in the country, Parkland Memorial Hospital.  More importantly, she is a board certified family practice physician licensed to practice medicine in the state of Texas.

Ms. Barbara Worrell NP- Ms. Worrell has been a nurse practitioner with over 35 years experience.  A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has completed specific advanced nursing education (generally a master's degree or doctoral degree) and training in the diagnosis and management of common as well as complex medical conditions. Nurse Practitioners provide a broad range of health care services. Nurse Practitioners are considered "Mid-level Providers/Practitioners," along with Clinical Nurse Specialists, Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and Physician Assistants. Nurse practitioners, along with other advanced practice nurses, function within the scope of their state's nurse practice act and have varying levels of physician collaboration or supervision. In some states, nurse practitioners function independent of physician involvement.

Ms. Barbara Dean, PA - Ms.Dean is a physician assistant (PA) has been practicing medicine since 2004.  A PA is a healthcare professional licensed to practice medicine with supervision of a licensed physician. A physician assistant is concerned with preventing, maintaining, and treating human illness and injury by providing a broad range of health care services that are traditionally performed by a physician. Physician assistants conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions.

Physician assistants exercise autonomy in medical decision making as determined by their supervising physician. Physician assistants are educated in the medical model designed to complement physician training. Physician assistants are not to be confused with medical assistants, who perform administrative and simple clinical tasks with limited college-level education in hospitals and clinics under the direct supervision of physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants.

Ms. Coleen Wilson RD - Ms. Wilson has over 30 years experience dealing with healthy diets and nutrition.  In the US nutrition professionals include the registered dietitian (RD) and the dietetic technician, registered (DTR). These terms, as well as simply dietitian, are legally protected terms regulated by the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Dietitians are registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (the certifying agency of the ADA) and are only able to use the label "Registered Dietitian" when they have met strict, specific educational and professional prerequisites and passed a national registration examination.

A dietitian's education in health science involves significant scientific based knowledge in anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physiology, nutrition, medical science. It is these strong foundations in advanced scientific knowledge and an internship that equipped with counseling skills and aspects of psychology enable a Registered Dietitian to assess, analyze, intervene, and educate a patient in relation to the diet and disease.

Our Philosophy:

A health insurance policy is a contract between an insurance company and an individual. A seperate contract exists between the insurance company and the physician.   The health insurance contract can be renewable annually or monthly. The type and amount of health care costs that will be covered by the health plan are specified in advance and documented in the member contract or evidence of coverage booklet.

Essentially, the insurance company acts as a middle-man between the patient and the health care provider in this type of transaction.  Although insurance companies play an essential role spreading out the risk of very high health care costs to thousands of policy holders, many types of illnesses and injuries are excluded from coverage.

Treatment for obesity is typically an excluded coverage.  This is unfortunate because about 60% of Americans are now overweight, and  nearly one fourth are obese. That is about one member in every family.

Moreover, complications from obesity causes approximately a thousand deaths each day. Some of obesity’s complications place in the top three for disease-related premature death. However, most people do not seek medical attention because this disease is not covered by insurance.

Obesity is a debilitation disease and the second highest cause of preventable death behind cigarette smoking.
